Mens Erger Je Niet Pierre Bastien and Christophe Petchanatz (aka Klimperei) met more than twenty years after their last musical collaboration. “Aeroplane Chess”—what is that? It’s the Hong Kong name for the universal game known here as “Ludo.” Pierre and Christophe play together here on sixteen simple, stripped-down tracks. They pass back and forth their figurines made of melodies, sounds, and rhythms, creating a minimal yet dense ensemble, with nothing missing from these two record jockeys. It brings to mind the music of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, an experimental Brian Eno, and Pascal Comelade’s blend of repetitive and popular music. Minimalism taken to the extreme, we let ourselves be transported onto the game board. Friendly cheerful, minimal and essential. If Calder had recorded an album, this would have been it. Christophe and Pierre have known each other for over 40 years, having been neighbors in Lyon. Their very distinct artistic worlds have, however, rarely intersected: as a duo on “Mécanologie portative” released by Prikosnovénie in 1998, a few other tracks on Klimperei’s CD “Patamob” in 2005 on Gazul Records, and a cover of “Une souris verte” for the compilation “No more no mouroir” in 2001 on InPolySons. This new convergence of complementary approaches, born of a long musical friendship, is therefore a heartwarming event.

Pierre Bastien et Christophe Petchanatz (alias Klimperei) se sont retrouvés plus de vingt ans après leur dernière collaboration musicale. « Aeroplane Chess » : qu’est-ce que c’est ? C’est le nom donné à Hong Kong au jeu universel que l’on appelle ici « Ludo ». Pierre et Christophe jouent ici ensemble sur seize morceaux simples et épurés. Ils se passent tour à tour leurs pions faits de mélodies, de sons et de rythmes, créant ainsi un ensemble minimaliste mais dense, où rien ne manque à ces deux DJ. Cela rappelle la musique du Penguin Café Orchestra, un Brian Eno expérimental et le mélange de musique répétitive et populaire de Pascal Comelade. Le minimalisme poussé à l’extrême, on se laisse transporter sur le plateau de jeu. Convivial, joyeux, minimaliste et essentiel.

Si Calder avait enregistré un album, ce serait celui-ci.

Christophe et Pierre se connaissent depuis plus de 40 ans, ayant été voisins à Lyon. Leurs univers artistiques, pourtant très distincts, se sont rarement croisés : en duo sur « Mécanologie portative » sorti chez Prikosnovénie en 1998, quelques autres titres sur le CD « Patamob » de Klimperei en 2005 chez Gazul Records, et une reprise de « Une souris verte » pour la compilation « No more no mouroir » en 2001 chez InPolySons. Cette nouvelle convergence d’approches complémentaires, née d’une longue amitié musicale, est donc un événement réjouissant.
